Through broken stone and rusted fences, two painted eyes still watch over Barrington Street. Once part of Jason Botkin’s vibrant ocean mural on the side of Freak Lunchbox, these fragments remain as silent sentinels — guardians of a heritage building caught between preservation and progress.
Controversial when it replaced Halifax’s beloved “Tall Ships 2000” mural, Botkin’s piece became a new chapter in the city’s cultural story. Now half-hidden, the mural’s eyes stare outward with defiance, reminding us that art — once released into the world — never truly fades.
This photograph preserves that fleeting moment: a mural turned guardian, a city’s memory made visible.
